As a graduate student at Indiana University, I had the pleasure of coinciding with one of my intellectual icons, the cognitive scientist-translator-creative nonfiction writer, Douglas Hofstadter. Before setting forth on my first long stretch of fieldwork in Colombia in 2015, I sat down with him to talk about salsa, Chopin, and multi-modal fugues. Religion Dispatches published a transcript.

More recently, as I've become increasingly drawn to the music, visual culture, and languages of the Pacific region of Colombia, I've honed in on the work of two artists-photographers-entrepreneurs from Quibdó, Colombia, from whom I draw a great deal of insight and inspiration.
